OK - I know it can be extremely intimidating and somewhat overwhelming to walk into some Jewelry Stores...but I have a suggestion that will make shopping for the number one most requested jewelry item...Costco!!!

You're laughing?  ...but I'm serious!  you are comfortable in the warehouse store - why not?

From their website: Costco makes purchasing quality jewelry easy by offering only the industry's highest quality diamonds at the lowest possible price. Costco's experienced buying team works with our suppliers to select timeless styles and create well-crafted and comfortable jewelry. Our team of Graduate Gemologists then inspects each piece for quality craftsmanship and every diamond for cut, color, and clarity to ensure your jewelry will sparkle for generations.

They carry an assortment of Diamond Studs, in a range of prices and I was blown away by the quality of the diamonds on my last visit to my local Costco.  Basically, I am just saying, find a place that makes you comfortable!

Recent Fine Jewelry #Auction at Bonham's Brings in Over $4 million....

Bonham's Shares A Few Of Their Favorite Things From the Fine Jewelry Auction

According to Bonham's, there was intense online bidding and a quick
competitive telephone bidding throughout the afternoon, bringing the Fine Jewelry auction at Bonhams New York to a triumphant close, with sales totaling over $4 million.

Colored gems, classic designs, and signature pieces performed fantastically, and Susan Abeles, Vice President and Director of the Jewelry at Bonhams North America, said: 'Contemporary signed jewels continue to thrive in the auction environment. The sale was dominated by colorful pieces which were well received by an international audience.'

Notable highlights of the afternoon include:

An exquisite diamond ring by Cartier, weighing 8.45 carats, which realized $293,000.

Kashmir sapphire & diamond ring, made $118,750, almost twice the high estimate.
A late Art Deco ruby and diamond bracelet (c. 1935), with a total diamond weight of
14.00 carats, which sold for $106,250.
Sapphire (3.20 ct) and Old European Diamonds (6.85 ctw) brooch with a combined
weight of 10.05 carats, which realized $112,500: 9 times the high estimate.

Renaissance Revival suite of sapphire, demantoid garnet and enamel jewelry (c. 1920),   fashioned by Louis Comfort Tiffany, soared past its high estimate making $161,000.

Colombian emerald cabochon ring weighing approximately 50 carats, surrounded by
diamonds. It achieved $106,250, over 3 times the high estimate.
A pair of natural button pearl diamond ear studs, each over 10mm,  mounted in 18k white gold.  Accompanied by GIA report #5161602019, dated October 8, 2014, stating: "the pearls are of natural origin, saltwater, no indications of treatment."  Achieved  $45,000

Earlier in December.... there seemed to be a resurgence of ruby-adorned jewelry at the London auction...a fact quickly confirmed with the crazy results from a pair of Art Deco, ruby and diamond clip brooches made by Cartier around 1930. They achieved an astonishing £482,500 after pre-sale estimates of £80,000-120,00 - followed by two ruby rings which far exceeded their pre-sale estimates.

First, a single-stone ring set with a large Burmese ruby, fashioned by the renowned jewelers Van Cleef & Arples in 1923, rose past the estimate of £80,000-100,000 to make $548,163.
Burmese ruby, in a setting made around 1930, and set with a cushion-cut stone weighing over 6 carats, fetched $548,462  after it was set to achieve £50,000-80,000.

As if the bidders needed more convincing, a beautiful belle époque ruby and diamond necklace made more than twice its top estimate, selling for $191,688, while another pair of Art Deco, ruby and diamond pendent earrings by Cartier more than doubled their lower estimate to achieve £72,100.

It was not all rubies, however, as sapphires also per
formed strongly, with a Cartier Art Deco sapphire and diamond ring making $323, 131, and an octagonal-cut sapphire and diamond ring realizing £146,500, twice its estimate.

Jean Ghika, Head of Jewelry UK and Europe, said: 'We achieved some outstanding results in the sale, particularly for period jewels and colored gem stones. The collection of Burmese rubies performed exceptionally well, proving that these rare gems continue to have an enduring appeal.'

It was a very busy December for Bonhams and the next Fine Jewelry sale in New York will be April 2015, and a selection of jewelry from the estate of Lauren Bacall will be offered as part of The Lauren Bacall Collection on March 31 and April 1 2015.

Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world's largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. Press Release from Galatea

#NFC PEARL FROM GALATEA GIVES JEWELRY A VOICE
Patented Momento Pearl™ Saves Your Precious Moments in a Pearl

The NFC-empowered Momento Pearl™ from Galatea: Jewelry by Artist is the first cultured pearl to contain near field communication technology, allowing a user to create a tailored voice message that can be played when the pearl is tapped against a compatible mobile device. Taking smart jewelry to a completely new, emotional level, the patent-pending Momento Pearl (U.S. Patent No. 14/517.827 and Trademark 86/434,536) can also store a variety of digital content including images, messages and videos.

Galatea gives Momento jewelry its voice by implanting an NFC chip deep inside the pearl. The tiny computer runs without a battery by induction energy. When the Galatea app is downloaded, the user records a message or uploads an audio file. By tapping the pearl against an NFC-enabled mobile device, the audio is played and other digital material displayed. From words of love and encouragement to wedding vows and Biblical passages, the emotional connections the Momento Pearl can make are truly endless.

The Momento Pearl Ad:

“This is where the future of jewelry begins,” says inventor and Galatea founder Chi Huynh. “A person can ‘live’ in this pearl forever, as it holds the voice and memories of a loved one.” Despite its high-tech interface, the real interest in the Momento Pearl lies in its ability to summon a voice, a memory and emotion, says Huynh, who plans on introducing more NFC-enabled jewelry to include gemstones and diamonds over the coming months.

The Cultured Pearl Revolutionary
Though the Momento Pearl is unique, Huynh says it’s just a natural extension of Galatea’s revolutionary work with pearls and pearl culturing over the last 20 years. Known for its hand-carved cultured Tahitian and freshwater pearls (the Momento Pearl collection features only hand-carved pearls), Galatea also owns a number of patents for its unique pearl and gemstone jewelry. In 2005, the company introduced the Galatea Pearl™ (U.S. Patent 7,062,940 B2), a pearl that is cultured using a colored stone bead. After the pearl’s nacre is carved away, the color can be seen below its surface. It’s been called the most significant breakthrough in pearl culturing since Kokichi Mikimoto patented the process in the early part of the 20th century.

The complete collection of Momento Pearl jewelry includes 29 pendants, 26 earrings and 8 rings in 14k gold with Tahitian and freshwater pearls. Manufacturer Suggested Retails begin at $350. The Momento Pearl Collection will be available at Galatea authorized retail jewelers in January 2015, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

About Galatea: Jewelry by Artist (www.galateausa.com): With an uncompromising artistic vision, Chi Huynh, founder of Galatea, has created some of the world’s most beautiful and unusual jewelry collections--collections that rely upon pearls and other gemstones that have been transformed by proprietary and patented processes. A poet, painter and humanitarian, Galatea, founded in 1994, employs over 150 people in the U.S. and Vietnam. Chinese Astrology uses one's birthday and birth time to predict their fortune. The astrological birth chart is built by the Chinese Astrology Calendar, which is a combination counting system of Yin-Yang Five Elements and 12 animals. The Five Elements are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. The twelve animal are Rat, Cow, Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Chicken, Dog and Pig. Year of 2015 is Wooden Sheep. Because Wood (tree) is connected to the color of Green. Therefore, 2015 is the Year of Green Wooden Sheep

 Wood   Sheep  Female wood

Personality of Sheep (Ram, Goat)

The Sheep, oddly enough, is thought to be the most feminine sign of the zodiac, perhaps because this is a very creative sign. The Sheep is artistically talented, and has a great sense of fashion. Chances are that this type will prefer to be a designer or painter, or go into the kind of profession where he can make the most of his gift for creating beautiful things.

Over 20 intricately carved and lifelike animal sculptures by world-renowned gemstone carvers Gerd and Patrick Dreher will go on exhibit at GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) world headquarters in Carlsbad, CA beginning  Fenruary 19th. The Dreher family, whose legacy dates back five generations, is part of the 600-year gemstone carving tradition in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, a major center for the cutting and carving of gems. “Generations of Mastery: Gemstone Carvings by Dreher” will be on view through summer 2015.

“Pieces by the Dreher family are among the most admired gemstone carvings in the world,” said Terri Ottaway, curator of the GIA Museum. “Their sophisticated designs and artistry have been refined and passed down through generations. We’re incredibly fortunate to be able to share the Dreher family’s extraordinary craftsmanship.”

Known for its one-of-a-kind gemstone carvings, particularly animal sculptures, the House of Dreher has created celebrated pieces since the late 1800s. In the mid-twentieth century, the family gained further acclaim for their work with design house Fabergé. Today, their carvings can be seen in museums around the world and in private collections. Dreher creates sculptures using many different gem materials, but a favorite of the design house is natural agate from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The more than 20 gem carvings in GIA’s “Generations of Mastery: Gemstone Carvings by Dreher” exhibit depict lifelike animals such as a chameleon, a starfish, and a frog perched on a lily pad. The Drehers are known for their extensive study of animals and other creatures, drawing from as many as 500 photos of each subject to create the superb detail in their works of art. Pieces in the exhibit include jasper, agate, tourmaline, ruby in zoisite, smoky quartz and grossular garnet.

GIA's Winter Edition of Gems & Gemology is Available Online - Highlights Diamonds

Press Release from GIA

Winter Issue of GIA’s Gems & Gemology Highlights Diamonds

Quarterly professional journal reviews auctions, colored diamonds, emeralds and more

The Winter 2014 issue of GIA’s peer-reviewed journal Gems & Gemology (G&G) reviews rough diamond auctions and pricing, the Argyle mine’s pink diamond tenders, a gemological study of the 12.03 carat Blue Moon diamond, the separation of natural and synthetic emeralds using vibrational spectroscopy, and much more. The issue is now available in print, and online with exclusive video content.

G&G’s cover story, “Rough Diamond Auctions: Sweeping Changes in Pricing and Distribution” by GIA Senior Industry Analyst Russell Shor, examines the growing percentage of rough diamonds being sold through auctions, a shift that has caused price volatility while opening up supply to more manufacturers and dealers. He explains that some in the industry advocate auctions as a more accurate reflection of rough diamond market values, while others fear they encourage price volatility and speculation.

Next is “Exceptional Pink to Red Diamonds: A Celebration of the 30th Argyle Diamond Tender,” an insightful review by the GIA laboratory’s John King, Dr. James E. Shigley and Claudia Jannucci. Over the years, GIA has graded extremely rare polished pink diamonds from Australia’s Argyle mine, which have been sold for 30 years through invitation-only tenders. This article presents a concise survey of the color, carat weight and cutting style of the gems offered through those tenders.

In another feature, Dr. Eloïse Gaillou of the Paris School of Mines, Dr. Jeffrey Post of the Smithsonian Institution and their co-authors present a gemological study of the 12.03 carat Blue Moon diamond, an internally flawless Fancy Vivid blue diamond. Discovered at the historic Cullinan mine in early 2014, this diamond set the auction record price for a rough gem prior to its fashioning. In the final article, Dr. Le Thi-Thu Huong from the Hanoi University of Science and her co-authors deliver a preliminary study – contrasting FTIR and Raman spectrometry – on the topic of separating natural and synthetic emeralds using vibrational spectroscopy.

The issue also includes entries on the first non-nacreous beaded cultured pearl, a new Ethiopian black opal deposit, a beryl and topaz doublet set in fine jewelry, and demantoid garnet from a new deposit in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province. Additional details about G&G, full articles, more in-depth coverage, hundreds of additional photos, and exclusive video footage are available on GIA’s website at http://www.gia.edu/gia-news-research.

At #GIA Dreher Exhibition and Talk With Patrick Dreher

0
0
We recently spent an extraordinary evening at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)...

You may have seen my announcement recently the Patrick Dreher from the Gem Carving Dynasty from Germany would be speaking at GIA! ...well we didn't hesitate!

A Little History

The undeniable Gem Carving capital of the world is Idar Oberstein and I think that many of us are aware of several of the Gem Artists and Styles that have come from that region.  Most have heard of the Munsteiner family and in particular Bernd Munsteiner who is the artist behind the Dom Pedro Aquamarine (14 inches tall and weighs 10,363 carats) in the Smithsonian...
Photo via GIA website
The Munsteiners have their style of carving/faceting and other Ateliers in Idar Oberstein focus elsewhere.  With this exhibit, it was interesting to learn the history of one of the few cutters that concentrate in the area of animal figures...and not pieced together figures (though they have created pieced figures) but the House of Dreher's focus is figures created from a single piece of gem rough.

Patrick Dreher is the 5th generation carver in his family from a region that is the soul of Gem Cutting and Carving - Idar Oberstein has a 500 year legacy....

Seen at the Scene

The evening started in the Main Lobby at GIA where the Dreher pieces had been beautifully displayed in the cases at the far side of the room, Food and Drink Serving Station behind the Reception Desk and tables filled the center.

It was a gathering that had attracted some of the most important names in the Industry - these are just a few of the faces I recognized....

  • The Larsen Family - Bill, Jeanne, their sons with their significant others....the evening was made possible due to their generous loan of the Carvings on display from the personal Collection of Bill & Jeanne Larsen.
  • Harold & Erica Van Pelt - two of the best gem and mineral photographers in the world. Few know that for the last 35 years Harold Van Pelt has perfected an extraordinary gem carving technique (a piece of Harold's is currently on display at GIA).
  • Meg Berry, of MegaGem, Multi-Award Winning Gem Cutter, formerly with Pala International
  • Robert Weldon, Manager of Photography and Visual Communications at GIA
  • Blair Beavers with the Pearl Guide and Graduate Gemologist

Meeting the Artist

We asked to move to a room that GIA often uses for presentations, seminars and symposiums...and in true GIA style the room was perfectly appointed so that everyone could see the detailed carvings and techniques as they were described.

Mr. Dreher spoke beautiful English and started with a brief overview of the 500 year gem cutting tradition of Idar-Oberstein, and wove his family's role throughout.  It was fabulous hearing about the distinction between assembled  pieces made from multiple gems and pieced together and the Dreher trademark use of a single piece of gem rough.

At one point he described his carving technique which would have been lost on most of those in attendance if it weren't for the multiple viewing screens throughout the room.

We then adjourned to the Lobby for Coffee & Dessert.

Thank you GIA, Patrick Dreher and the Larsen Family for the lovely evening, good company and yet another fabulous learning experience.
