Uneek Introduces the Amore Collection - Features Two Tone Metals & Surprise Diamonds!

From Company Release

Presenting New Engagement Ring Styles from
Uneek's Amore Collection

See what retailers have been buzzing about at this year's LUXURY/JCK shows! We have turned the romanticism up a notch by infusing our filigree accents with some expressionistic inspiration, and by adding more "surprise diamonds" for that extra sparkle!

Case in point: the beyond charming and absolutely gorgeous "La Notte Stellata" engagement ring, which took inspiration from Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, as evident in the whimsical expressionistic swirls, and the dreamily scattered accent diamonds on each side of the profile!

These styles stand out from their elder counterparts in the Amore Collection in that they feature rose gold filigree that not only dances under the head and stays there, but extends to become the lower shank, so now the rings becomes half white and half rose, for a true blue two-tone look!

Visit the Uneek Website to learn more about these new styles!

JCK Tucson

JCK's Inspiring New Design Concept
for Tucson Event

Supported by Newly Appointed Advisory Board of Industry Luminaries

As JCK embarks upon its third year in Tucson February 3-7, 2016 it comes with a revised concept befitting to the environment at the picturesque JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa and unlike any other in the jewelry industry. The natural beauty of the AAA four-diamond resort will serve as the jewelry industry’s winter oasis, open to all qualified retailers and featuring a new hosted buyer program. Offering a relaxing yet productive environment for business and networking, that is expected from a JCK Event, infused with the inspiration and imagination of Tucson Gem Week.

As in years past JCK Tucson will be open to all qualified jewelry retailers, complemented by an all new hosted buyer program. In 2016, hosted retailers will include qualified elite design, boutique and gallery buyers who will receive a complimentary hotel stay along with personalized vendor matchmaking and special amenities.

"We've listened to the jewelry community and what they want out of their Tucson experience,” said Katie Dominesey, Vice President for JCK Events. “We recognize that JCK needs to celebrate the eclectic and fun of Tucson while adding some finishing touches both on and off the show floor. Business days start with a morning hike, continue with treasure hunting for the best baubles, and end by the fire pit with colleagues—a truly well rounded business experience.”

The event takes place during Tucson Gem Week which includes events happening at over 40 sites around the city. JCK will offer improved and expanded transportation services providing a convenient, quick ride to/ from the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa to other events downtown.

JCK Tucson’s new concept is reinforced by the distinguished members of its newly appointed Advisory Board including: Aaron Faber Gallery, Z Folio, Jack Lewis Jewelers, Alishan, Atelier Zobel, Michael Jensen Design and more.

“I’m delighted to join the JCK Tucson Advisory Board. Edward Faber and I fell in love with the JCK Tucson show this past February. It’s the sunsets on the terrace, the sunny blue skies all day and the relaxed atmosphere in which to do business. We were able to buy designer jewelry at the show in the luxurious JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa, meet new designers and friends at sunrise meditation or evening cocktails on the terrace, and still source gemstones from the many gem shows, all in a non-frantic atmosphere. We are looking forward to 2016 and the new designers and new lines that will be at the show, as well as good friends and gallery anchors,” said Patricia Kiley Faber, Aaron Faber Gallery.

JCK Tucson’s 2016 festivities will kick off on Tuesday (February 2) on the JW Marriott’s golf course, pairing together jewelry retailers, manufacturers and industry professionals for a scramble tournament benefiting Children’s Health Fund.

An Important Gemstone presented in a very elegant design.

The feminine look of this 18K Gold ring is enhanced with the pink-purple color of the central Spinel from Mogok.

This 24.79 ct stone is unique in its size, cut and clarity. The bigger the size, the smaller is the chance to avoid imperfections. It takes exceptional skills to fetch maximum dimensions of a rare stone and keep the whole piece loupe-clean, just like the Spinel in this ring. The central stone is smartly proportioned and finished with two baguette D-color Diamonds on each side, weighing 2.71 ct total.

American Gem Society and Jewelers Mutual

take “Sharing the Rough” documentary
on a cross-country tour

The American Gem Society (AGS) announces a unique collaboration with Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company (JM) in bringing Orin Mazzoni’s new documentary film, “Sharing The Rough,” to the public across the country in a series of exclusive screenings beginning early September 2015.

This unique and evocative film documents the never-before-captured journey of a colored gemstone as it travels from mine to market, while also sensitively exploring the challenges and opportunities of an emerging mining economy in East Africa. Co-hosted by the AGS, JM and local AGS Guilds, the private and public screenings are spanning from the East to West Coasts starting in September and running through the winter. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A session with a “Sharing the Rough” team member. Additional screening dates are available and can be scheduled by contacting local AGS Guild leadership.

"We are excited to make this inspiring film available for viewing in local markets around the country,” says Ruth Batson, CEO of the American Gem Society and AGS Laboratories. “The film features the designer, Mark Schneider, as well as the cutter, Roger Dery, both members of the AGS. Having access to the rich, visual imagery of the mine-to-market journey of a gemstone is sure to inspire consumers and gemologists alike, revitalizing our genuine affection and admiration for Mother Nature’s most highly acclaimed treasures.”

The 85 minute film has won a number of awards at film festivals around the globe and creatively explores the stories of individual artisans throughout the supply chain, from miners to cutters to jewelry designers. The director, Orin Mazzoni, himself hails from a third generation family jewelry business, and they are also long-standing AGS members. “Sharing the Rough” is his feature directorial debut, and has proved to be a perfect melding of his two passions: gemology and filmmaking.

“The film truly embodies our mutual passion for jewelry,” said Trina Woldt, Chief Marketing Officer at Jewelers Mutual of the collaboration with AGS and Mazzoni. “History is important to jewelry owners and the story behind the jewelry is what makes no two pieces alike. Those who see Orin’s film will look at their jewelry in a whole new light.”

JCK Events Gains Two Industry Powerhouses to Support Design as Main Focus for 2016

JCK Events is proud to unveil its design strategy for 2016 with two additions to the JCK team, an alternative retailer focus, and enhanced offerings. "Now, more than ever, jewelry retailers are looking for designers that have integrity of product and process and JCK wants to be the destination for it. We're aiming high this year and working with the industry's best to re-imagine and elevate our offerings to the designer jewelry community in 2016," states Katie Dominesey, Industry Vice President for JCK Events.

High on the list is the addition of Jacqueline Stone as Design Consultant to JCK Tucson and JCK Las Vegas Design Center. Stone will be the eyes and ears for the designer community. An impressive resume, Stone is the founder and lead designer of Salt + Stone, a fine jewelry company based in Brooklyn, NY. She was named one of New York City's Design Entrepreneurs, and has a diverse background in finance, marketing, merchandising, production, product development and fine jewelry including Tiffany & Co. Product Development. Stone can also be seen and heard in the industry as a speaker for The Gemological Institute of America's Lecture Series along with contributing to her weekly columns in National Jeweler's Designer's Diary and The Good Men Project, Evolution of Love.

Michelle Graff, Editor-in-Chief of National Jeweler commented, "I've told Jackie this in person and I'll say it here, if she wasn't designing jewelry, she definitely could have a successful career in writing. Her columns are well written, insightful and engaging. I am so proud to see her working as a consultant with JCK. I know she'll be a great asset, both to the shows and to the designers themselves."

iDazzle's Monica Stephenson participated in the Blogger Panel at the 2015 JCK Talks
"In my role as Design Ambassador, my job is to help both jewelers and retailers alike get the most of the shows. I'll be scheduling appointments, helping retailers discover new talent and most importantly getting small jewelry businesses the attention they deserve. I'm a huge fan of building community and it's an honor to be included in this dynamic team," stated Stone.
In addition to bringing Stone on board, JCK will also be backing its efforts by collaborating with a newly formed Design Advisory Group including: Patricia Faber, Aaron Faber Gallery; Zdena Jiroutova, Z Folio Gallery; John Carter, Jack Lewis Jewelers; Andrea Riso, Talisman Collection, and Catherine Jensen, Michael Jensen Designs. Also joining this all-star group will be Monica Stephenson from idazzle. This group is the sounding board for ensuring JCK is vetting exhibitors of high-caliber and creating value with its events.

Stephenson is well known in the industry for her blog idazzle.com where she covers the jewelry industry from an insider's perspective. At idazzle.com, Stephenson delves into the true inspirations of jewelry designers, along with reporting trends in the fine jewelry and emphasizing the significance of adornment to readers.

JCK's design spaces at both JCK Tucson (February 3-7, 2016) and JCK Las Vegas (June 3-6, 2016) will undergo extensive makeovers in 2016 offering curated, one-of-a-kind finished fine jewelry in ambient and inspiring destinations. New to 2016, JCK Tucson and JCK Las Vegas will introduce a hosting program for elite design-focused retailers. "Acknowledging that designers are not necessarily looking to be carried in only traditional jewelry stores, we have scoured the industry finding the best galleries, boutiques, and alternative retailers. We are investing in our shows and making sure that the right retailers are not only attending, but hosted at our properties in Tucson and Las Vegas," echoes Dominesey on her design-focused strategy.

JCK is also investing in unique looks for its design sections. Both JCK Tucson and JCK Las Vegas are getting a makeover with new booth design and layout. JCK Las Vegas' new chalkboard-styled booths and non-linear floor plan will allow designers to draw and show off their inspiration with a unique community feel. Tucson has revamped its offering utilizing two ballrooms, one curated Design ballroom and one Custom ballroom with technology and loose gemstones. JCK Tucson has improved the vetting process of its exhibitors and its transportation to other shows to ensure both the high-level of exhibitors and convenience of the February event.

Dominesey finishes with "Overall, it's a very exciting time for JCK. We're adding design competitions, creating events to bring people together, working hard to understand the retailer— essentially re-imagining what it means to exhibit at a tradeshow at any stage in a designer's career. We want to push ahead of what the norm has been and bring some excitement back. JCK is invested in Design and with the collaboration of people like Jacqueline and Monica, it makes the experience not only relevant, but fun."

Amnesty International Report Brings Out World Diamond Council Statement in Response

World Diamond Council Issues Statement in Response to Amnesty International Report

The World Diamond Council (WDC) has issued a statement in response to the recently published report by Amnesty International focusing on the global diamond supply chain and the Central African Republic.

In its statement, the WDC urges Amnesty International to engage with the Kimberley Process (KP) and work together with the KP participating governments, the industry and the Civil Society Coalition of the KP to achieve the goal of zero conflict in the rough diamond supply chain.

The full text of the statement follows:
“As the representative organization of the global diamond and jewellery industry at the
Kimberley Process, the World Diamond Council (WDC) is the first to agree that there is more
work to be done when it comes to managing the global diamond supply chain. While the vast
majority of diamonds contribute a significant benefit to the countries in which they’re
produced, as an industry we are committed to staying the course until we reach the goal of
zero conflict diamonds.

We welcome the recommendations in the Amnesty International report and are working
together as an industry in full support of the goal of zero conflict. In addition, governments
must assert their control in mining areas and along their borders to prevent smuggling.
However, the Amnesty International report ignores the careful and conscientious framework being put in place in CAR. Interim arrangements regarding future CAR diamond exports and green export zones have been approved by the Kimberley Process and the Civil Society Coalition of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, who have in addition commissioned an outside company to audit the stockpile.

We also applaud the Antwerp Diamond Office's strict control mechanism for each import or
export of diamonds. Their close monitoring led to the interception and seizure in 2014 of two
shipments containing rough diamonds from the Central African Republic. This is an example of our members' commitment to ensuring the integrity of the industry.

Amnesty International has been a member of the Civil Society Coalition of the Kimberley
Process in the past. We invite them to participate by re-engaging with the Civil Society
Coalition.  We will continue to encourage the industry, governments, the UN, and NGOs to
work together to improve the Kimberley Process and the international monitoring of the
process, so that the goal of zero conflict diamonds can be achieved.”

About the World Diamond CouncilThe primary objective of the WDC is to represent the diamond industry in the development and implementation of the regulatory and voluntary systems to control the trade in diamonds embargoed by the United Nations or covered by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.  Visit http://www.worlddiamondcouncil.org to learn more.

Summer 2015 Gems & Gemology
A Focus on Gem Inclusions

The beauty and value of inclusions, double stars,
and corundum from Tajikistan

The Summer 2015 issue of Gems & Gemology (G&G), GIA’s quarterly professional journal, takes a deep look at gem inclusions, including how they are documented using modern digital photography and image-processing software, how some interact with light inside a fashioned gem to produce a rare form of asterism, and the value that might be gained by studying them. The issue, which also debuts a new quarterly column on gem inclusions called “Micro-World” and features an examination of corundum from Tajikstan, is now available in print and online.

G&G’s cover story “Digital Photomicrography for Gemologists” offers basic image-capture techniques and tips to get the most out of gem photomicrographs by applying digital processing. The article by Nathan Renfro, analytical manager of GIA’s gem identification department, builds on the landmark 2003 paper by his longtime mentor and master of inclusion photography John Koivula, GIA’s analytical microscopist, to offer a highly practical and relevant guide for the gemologist.

Next, a team led by independent researcher Dr. Karl Schmetzer offers a comprehensive description of the dual-color “double stars” observed in some natural sapphire, ruby and quartz, as well as synthetic corundum, including diffusion-treated examples. The issue’s third article, by Dr. Elena Sorokina of the Fedorovsky All-Russian Research Institute of Mineral Resources and her coauthors, provides an update on the geology, mining and internal and external features of ruby and sapphire from Snezhnoe, Tajikistan.

The issue also features G&G’s regular Lab Notes and Gem News International sections, which include entries from the 2015 Tucson shows and a report of the recent Maine pegmatite workshop. In the inaugural “Micro-World” column, section editors Nathan Renfro, Elise Skalwold and John Koivula provide concise reports accompanied by stunning photomicrographs of specially chosen specimens, inviting gemologists to take a closer look at the astounding beauty and variety of inclusions in gems.

G&G’s free archive containing every issue from 1934 to present, more in-depth coverage, hundreds of additional photos, and exclusive video footage are available on GIA’s website at http://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology.

About GIA
An independent nonprofit organization, GIA (Gemological Institute of America), established in 1931, is recognized as the world’s foremost authority in gemology. GIA invented the famous 4Cs of Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight in the early 1950s and in 1953, created the International Diamond Grading System™ which, today, is recognized by virtually every professional jeweler in the world.

Through research, education, gemological laboratory services, and instrument development, the Institute is dedicated to ensuring the public trust in gems and jewelry by upholding the highest standards of integrity, academics, science, and professionalism. Visit www.gia.edu

The sale achieved £5.16 million, with 87% lots sold by value and 109 lots going to new owners.

The Hope Spinel was the highlight of the sale, smashing its pre-sale estimate of £150,000-£200,000 as a result of competitive bidding on the phones. It sold for £962,500, achieving a new world record price of $30,000 per carat. This exceptional gem was bought by a private telephone bidder.

The second top lot of the auction was another icon: an Art Deco enamel, gem-set and diamond 'Tutti Frutti' bracelet by Cartier. Made in New York in 1929, the bracelet, with a highly articulated geometric strap and vine motifs, was sold for £458,500 to a telephone bidder.

The market for top quality, natural pearls continues to remain strong according to the September sale results. A circular natural pearl ring, measuring 16.71 x 10.94mm, and set between baguette-cut diamonds shoulders sold for four times its pre-sale estimate of £50,000 to £70,000, achieving £206,500.

Signed jewelry also performed extremely well with a rare diamond 'Torsade' bangle, by Suzanne Belperron, circa 1932, capturing the attention of bidders worldwide. The highly desirable collectors' piece was estimated at £40,000-£60,000, but after bidding from the saleroom, online and over the phones, the bangle sold for £164,500.

Other key lots included:

• A sapphire and diamond ring, by Boucheron. The rectangular step-cut sapphire, weighing 7.54 carats, between tapered baguette and brilliant-cut diamond shoulders outstripped its pre-sale estimate of £40,000-£60,000 and sold for £110,500.

• A Belle Époque diamond single-stone ring, circa 1910. The old hexagonal-cut diamond, weighing 8.18 carats, had a pre-sale estimate of £30,000-£50,000 and sold for £80,500.

Jean Ghika, Bonhams Head of Jewelry for UK and Europe, says: "We had an exceptional sale with a number of very rare items that naturally attracted interest worldwide. Demand for colored gemstones, signed jewelry and period pieces continued to remain strong. The sale represented a great start to the jewelry auction season this autumn and winter."

"Period and art deco earrings were also strong performers at the auction according to Bonhams. Examples included a pair of Art Deco diamond pendent earrings, by Cartier, circa 1925, which sold for more than five times their pre-sale estimate of £20,000-£30,000, being successfully bought by a telephone bidder for £134,500. Further on in the sale, a pair of early 19th century girandole earrings, with a pre-sale estimate of £18,000-£20,000, achieved £86,500."

Jean Ghika of Bonhams says: "These two sets of earrings were wonderful examples of classic period earrings, beautifully designed and in their original condition. These factors make them highly desirable along with the fact that they are extremely wearable today."
Bonhams is now expecting the strong market to be reflected during its next two Fine Jewelry sales in New York on 13th October and Hong Kong on 30th November.

Bonhams sells more jewelry lots each year than any other international house and has more dedicated jewelry auctions annually.

From a Press Release

New JCKonline.com

Features Refreshed Design, Enhanced Content

and Responsive Design

JCK magazine and Reed Exhibitions recently announced the launch of a new, redesigned website, jckonline.com. Key features of the site include a cleaner and more sophisticated design, a more engaging user experience with enhanced search and navigation, and responsive design.

The content has been simplified into three main buckets—Industry, Retail, and Fashion—all accessed through the News & Trends navigation tab. Show information and editors' blogs are also now easier to access. "We'll never relinquish our ties to print, but we know that an impressive digital presence is key to growing JCK's reputation among a new generation of jewelers," said Victoria Gomelsky, Editor-in-Chief, JCK magazine.
"We are thrilled to introduce a new website platform that provides cohesive and seamless navigation between JCK magazine and JCK Events, allowing for a better user experience whether you are on your computer or mobile device. You'll notice that the new sites are more visually eye-catching, with larger graphic displays, to showcase the true beauty of the jewelry designs laced throughout the content," said Yancy Weinrich, Senior Vice President of JCK Events at Reed Exhibitions.
The new JCK website showcases more impactful and unique ad units, including the new JCK Branding Ad Unit. This unit allows advertisers to take center stage on the very first page of each unique visitor's daily visit and engage JCK's powerful audience of retailers.
"The ongoing trend in online advertising is a move away from click-through rates and toward branding opportunities. The new JCKonline provides our advertisers with larger ad units, including an IAB "Super Leaderboard," an IAB "Half Page," and our own custom Branding Ad Unit. These units offer advertisers branding opportunities to showcase their beautiful jewelry or essential services," said Mark Smelzer, Publisher of JCK magazine and JCKonline.com.

#GalleryOpening The Gallery at Reinstein|Ross Honors The Gem Visions of Robert Bentley!

The Gallery at Reinstein & Ross Invites you to the opening of their new show...Robert Bentley Gems!
"Robert Bentley: By Nature" -- Opens October 22nd (with an Artist Reception 6-8pm) and continues through November 22nd. The exhibition will feature approximately 60 examples of Bentley’s gemstones as well as a smaller collection of Bentley’s work, as incorporated into finished jewelry by the Reinstein|Ross workshops. Truly an artist, Bentley works to allow the unique and natural character of the stones to exhibit themselves to the world."

This is my opinion but I am sure you will agree...whether it is his "Plate" cuts or basic cabochons (is there anything "basic" about a Robert Bentley Gem)...there is no one doing what Robert Bentley does.

Plate Cut Beads
From the more formal shaped plate cut beads to the frenzy of the thinner front to back drilled plates.

Hex Faceted Tubes
These – especially in Tourmaline and Aquamarine – are my favorites. They look like raw tourmaline and aquamarine crystals that are shaped, faceted (in long facets following the tube shape) and polished. They also offer this shape with hexagonal facets.

Faceted Beads
These are some of the most dynamic beads – big beads with large free-form facets that, when used in a necklace would send light to the face.

Hammered Beads
Huge gemmy chunks of gemstone with a rough hammered finish – yet still clear, clean and polished!

...and hammered Chalcopyrite!

Lenses
Crystal clear round lentil shaped beads of some of the gemmiest (is that a word?) material. This is the grade of gem that usually gets sent to the faceters for use in individual cut stones.

RARE – this isn't just rare stones, but stones that are rarely cut into beads! ...strands of watermelon tourmaline...

...and then there are the beads that honor the inclusions!

"Robert Bentley began his love affair with gemstones while accompanying his grandfather to rock hound meetings in the 1950’s. He graduated from Pratt Institute in 1972 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. While he continued to paint and sculpt (he still does today), his fascination with gemstones took precedence and The Robert Bentley Company showroom was opened in New York City in 1994.

For nearly twenty years, The Robert Bentley Company has been working with an international community of talented stone cutters to provide the fine art jeweler with better, gem-quality colored stones. The extensive inventory spans a broad spectrum, from fine facets and uniquely crafted cabochons to natural crystal structures, distinctive crystal surface pieces, fine beads, druseys, and an array of phenomenal inclusions.
